Smoker life insurance rates are considerably higher than for non-smokers. Sometimes more than double the rate. What’s more, the smoker rate continues to soar as you age. So you smoke an occasional cigar, is that really enough reason for an insurance company to rate you as a smoker? It is…but there are several companies that won’t! Here are some smoker life insurance facts!
How many cigars can I smoke?
You can get non-smoker life insurance rates if you smoke as little as 4 cigars a year up to 1 per week! Your independent life insurance agent should know how many cigars each insurer allows to keep you rated as a non-smoker.
What else do I need to know?
- You must admit to smoking on your application and your exam.
- Your urine test must be negative for nicotine.
- If your doctor records are ordered, they must show the same smoking history.
Pipe, chewing tobacco, nicotine substitutes
Some companies will classify you as a “non-smoker” even with nicotine present in your system. However, among these insurers, the amount of smoking will further limit the carrier(s) available to you.
I use an electronic cigarette
You could get non-smoker plus rates if….
- You have not smoked any cigarettes for at least 12 months.
- Your urine can test positive for nicotine.
- You can qualify for the standard plus classification.
Important Takeaway
All insurance company requirements are not created equally. It can save you time and money to use an independent life insurance agent familiar with the ins and outs of smoker ratings.
